But its unusual history has rarely been told. Alex Drace- Francis surveys the arrival and spread of maize cultivation in Romanian lands from Ottoman times to the eve of the First World War, and also the image of mămăligă in art and popular culture. Drawing on a rich array of sources and with many new findings, Drace-Francis shows how the making of mămăligă has been shaped by global economic forces and overlapping imperial systems of war and trade. The story of maize and mămăligă provides an accessible way to revisit many key questions of Romanian and broader regional history. More generally, the book links the history of production, consumption, and representation. Analyses of recipes, literary and popular depictions, and key vocabulary complete the work."-- |cProvided by publisher. 588 Description based on online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on August 15, 2022). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Polenta|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85104173|zRomania|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79049551-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 0 National characteristics, Romanian.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85089994 650 0 Cooking (Corn)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85031986|zRomania|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79049551-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Polenta.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1068346 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 National characteristics, Romanian.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1033502 650 7 Manners and customs.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1007815 650 7 HISTORY / Europe / Eastern.|2bisacsh 650 7 Cooking (Corn)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1753075 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE / Agriculture & Food (see also POLITICAL SCIENCE / Public Policy / Agriculture & Food Policy) |2bisacsh 651 0 Romania|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85114998 651 0 Romania|xSocial life and customs.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008116710 651 7 Romania.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205085 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aDrace-Francis, Alex.|tMaking of mămăligă |dBudapest ; New York : Central European University Press, 2022|z9789633865835|w(DLC) 2022028310 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=3192035|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
