Summary |
Four-part adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's feisty and passionate story, set across the social divide, in the changing world of Victorian industrial society. Tensions rise as the workers strike over pay. Margaret has a secret to tell her friend Bessy - she has a brother, who is coming to visit their ill mother. Through desperation, some of the strikers are driven to riot and Margaret is caught, literally and metaphorically, between the workers and their employer when she steps in to try and protect Thornton from violence. Thornton acts on this opportunity to declare his feelings for Margaret. He proposes but she rejects him harshly. |
